How to spot – and avoid – a distracted driver

On Behalf of | Nov 28, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Wrecks

Distracted drivers are more common than ever before in Kentucky and throughout the country. Luckily they’re easy to spot and avoid.

How to spot a distracted driver

Distracted driving might be hard to spot initially, but if you know the signs, you can stay safe while driving. Keep an eye out for these behaviors:

  • Drivers speed or drive slowly. Drivers who are distracted may not notice the traffic around them or the speed limit.
  • Unexpected speed changes. Distracted drivers may slow down or speed up intermittently.
  • Avoid lane weaving. When a driver has their attention diverted, they may appear to have difficulty maintaining lane position.
  • Avoid long stops. When a distracted driver is approaching a stop sign, he or she may take longer than usual to react and may not react to green lights as quickly.

They may be changing their radio or drunk driving. How they drive will reveal their ability to drive safely under the surrounding conditions. If a distracted driver is close to you, remember to drive defensively to prevent motor vehicle accidents.

How to avoid distracted drivers

If you see a driver who appears to be distracted around you, don’t panic. You can keep yourself and your car safe. Whenever you see a driver showing distracted driving behaviors, assume that they aren’t keeping their eyes on the road . To avoid motor vehicle accidents, reduce your speed so they can pass or pass them carefully. You should only do this if you can do it safely.

As you drive, be aware of what’s going on around you, and stay safe if you notice distracted drivers.
